Lake City native Caroline Reutter knows Southern tradition. In fact, loyal fans of her seven-layer caramel cake say she’s mixed it right into the batter. Brought up around the kind of Southern entertaining traditions in which food creates memories, Caroline didn’t think twice about serving her old family recipe for caramel cake, a Southern favorite, at her youngest sons christening. The reaction was overwhelming and earned her an immediate fan base. Though she’s since learned to call Annapolis, Maryland, home, and her company, Caroline’s Cakes, has moved into national distribution, Caroline is all South Carolinian at heart.
Her cakes are freshly baked to order and shipped nationwide in airtight magnolia-decorated tins that allow for gift giving, immediate enjoyment, or a six-month freezer life (though many customers claim to have frozen their cakes for more than a year with excellent results). Caroline’s caramel cake is her most popular, but she’s expanded her recipe box to include an array of other treats, including specialty and wedding cakes.
